REHNA R IRS
2010 Batch, ECE
One of the most amazing experiences in our lives that gives an opportunity to explore is the college phase. Life at college is the time when the teenage years end and we all dive deep into the ocean of new beginnings and possibilities. This golden period provided sufficient freedom for the first time which equipped me for all the challenges faced in life.
I was initially skeptical moving to a women’s only college LBSITW and it’s role in helping me for a holistic personal development. However, I had an entirely different journey here. Here I met with challenging experiences, friends for lifetime, excellent teachers cum mentors and a wonderful infrastructure which I was always proud about. I could concentrate equally on my academics and extra curricular acitivites due to the support from the faculty. The faculty inspired me with their own passion for studies and taught me to dream big like civil services.
I also got the opportunity to be the representative of my class and placement committee at lbsitw. I feel one should always explore such kinds of leadership roles, whether be at school or college because it gives a different level of exposure and management skills. And it was a double bonanza at lbsitw because the girls did all the works, usually done by the boys in co-ed colleges. This gives an immense sense of empowerment and confidence. Let it be getting out after dusk to manage the culturals or conducting the college fest or to invite famous personalities – doing the unusual wiped out the fear to deviate from the normal. Working with NSS at college also provided me with opportunities to work for the needy and gave a different insight to life.
I learnt that perseverance will always help to achieve what looks impossible, for which I am grateful to my alma mater. As a woman, I realized I can break the glass ceiling and only determination is what one requires to do so. Neither having family nor having a baby stopped me to prepare for my civil service examination. I cleared the civils twice and for the second clearance, I attended the UPSC interview carrying my second baby 8 months in my stomach. The confidence I got from my college life helped me to break the stereotypes that it is impossible for mothers to dream and achieve big in life.As our former President Dr. Abdul Kalam rightly said “dreams are not what you see in sleep, dreams are those which do not let you sleep”
